At Floor Coverings International of Sherwood Park, we love having the opportunity to interview bloggers who are making an impact on the design world. Traci Connell was kind enough to answer some questions and her knowledge about how she got started in the interior design world! You can check out her blog here.
Please tell us a little about yourself.
Hi! I am an award-winning creative entrepreneur whose business sense and design skills are combined with a passion for delivering interiors that are at the heart of livable style. In 2011, life threw a curve ball and I was now a single mother with three children and their sole provider. Fueled by the pure passion for feeding my family and realizing my dream, the rebirth of my blog and company was established as Traci Connell Interiors. Within the last four years, I have grown my business ten fold, established an award-winning firm of 5 and managed to cultivate happy and successful children.
Why did you decide to start a blog? What do you enjoy about blogging?
Formally trained as an elementary teacher, I enjoyed the creativity and structure of the classroom but knew I had not found my passion. The big “Ah ha” moment came in 2000 when a dear friend stated, “why can’t you make money doing something you love?” After careful consideration, Connell Interiors was born. While working to provide a second income, the first decade was spent developing my eye for design, blogging about things I loved, honing my skill for business practices, holding leadership roles in the Interior Design Society, and completing successful client projects as well as many charity opportunities.
How would you describe your interior design and decor style?
With what my client coined as, “timeless, sophisticated taste”, I offer a classic design with transitional flair and clean lines. My ability to transform residential interiors by layering color, shape, and texture has earned me the respect of my discriminating clientele. It is a mix of traditional and modern with a twist of classic.
My eye for space planning and design is combined with my knowledge of project management that differentiates me from other interior designers. From initial planning to final details, each project is outlined through a state-of-the-art project management system, streamlining the process and together as one-of-a-kind.
Where do you find your inspiration?
Inspiration is everywhere! I look to fashion, nature and even friends and family when it comes to being inspired. One look at an outfit with bright colors could have me designing a classic room with pops of bright colors the next day.
Tell us about a recent project you’re proud of.
I worked with some empty nesters who were considering moving and did not think it was feasible to transform their master bedroom into a relaxing retreat they could enjoy for another 15 years. We saw otherwise, and soon with a spaceplan and color scheme in place, the vision to renew the space came to fruition. In order to bring functionality to a rather large bedroom, it had to be sectioned off into different uses. A custom height TV console by Paloma Creations displays modern acrylic hardware and oval detailing while bringing the darker hues of the headboard throughout the room. The upholstered bed in front of a grasscloth textured wall is a dramatic statement when first entering the room.
Paired with custom paintings and bedding that dawn the fabric that started this serene color scheme, this bed vignette is soft, serene, and soothing. A driftwood wrapped floor length mirror, which brings in the natural elements the client desired, accompanied by two stools to assist in their morning routine gives a purpose to the wall outside the Master Bath. The largest transformation is the existing built-in that breathes new life with the removal of the moldings, fluting, mirrors, and beveled glass. This was replaced with fresh white paint, bold decorative hardware, shaker-style doors, and grasscloth backing. A sitting area in the middle of the room under a beaded Currey fixture is the softest anchor to this master suite retreat.
